Neural networks draw on context to improve machine translations

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam are using neural networks to help statistical machine translation systems learn what all human translators know—that the best translation of a word often depends on the context.

The neural network is able to derive grammatical functions of words without having explicit knowledge of the grammar, said Ke Tran, one of the researchers. This means that to learn word functions the method does not depend on examples hand-picked by the researchers, which can be a difficult and costly process, especially for languages with few speakers.

New Google Translate Chrome extension w/ inline translation support

Google this evening has announced a new Chrome extension that ties directly in with Google Translate. The new extension allows you to highlight a piece of text on a web page and then click the Translate icon that pops up. Alternatively, you can right-click on a phrase and choose “Google Translate” from the list of options.

EC opens the gate towards the implementation of Nanomedicine Translation Hub

A major step in implementing the ETPN Translation Hub has been reached, with three European projects entering the finalisation stage of their EU Grant Agreements. The project ENATRANS is for networking of SMEs in the nano-biomedical sector and supporting the SMEs with getting their products from the laboratory phase to the clinical applications. The projects ‘NANOFACTURING’ and ‘NANOPILOT’ will establish pilot lines to scale-up the production of novel nanopharmaceuticals from the lab-scale to the quantities needed for clinical testing.

How an incorrect translation of the synod report created chaos

An incorrect translation into English of the original midterm report of the Synod on the Family may have spurred controversial interpretations of the document itself.

The key word “valutando,” which has sparked controversy within the Church, was translated by the Vatican as “valuing.” Italian’s “valutando” in fact means “evaluating,” and in this context would be better translated with “weighing” or “considering.” The English translation, in contrast, suggests a valuing of the homosexual orientation, which could at least create confusion to those who are faithful to the teaching of the Church.
